Tokyo: The Fiat 500 disappears with Lupin III - February 2008

As soon as it arrived in Tokyo the new Fiat 500 came across an old friend, Lupin III, the world’s most famous gentleman thief.

Having got wind of the press conference being held for the car’s launch on February 22 in Tokyo, Lupin III got there before everyone else and put one of his cunning plans into action, slipping behind the wheel of the new, bright 500.
Incredibly, this daring coup was captured on camera by an amazed spectator, in a 4 second video clip, while on the streets of the Japanese city, curious passers-by also managed to snatch a few precious shots.

Although surprising, Lupin III’s feat was by no means a first: our cunning hero has already appeared several times at the wheel of a Fiat 500 during his various daring adventures around the world. You may remember ‘Lupin III – Cagliostro Castle’, for example, the 1979 film by the Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki. In that movie, Lupin III could be seen in a legendary yellow Fiat 500.

The two will soon be seen together again on screen, as the new Fiat 500 makes a appearance in the new animated film ‘Lupin the IIIrd. Green v Red’, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the world’s coolest animated thief, drawn by Monkey Punch.

Do you want to know more? For now all we can tell you is that the film will be premièred in Tokyo on 8 March and will be launched officially on DVD on April 2 in Japan.

To celebrate the occasion, the new Fiat 500 will go on show at the TMS and Nippon Television stand as part of the Tokyo International Anime’ Fair, the biggest animation-oriented event in Japan: trailers of the DVD will be shown, and Fiat 500 gadgets will be handed out.
